Welcome to Far Cry 5, a lily-livered attempt at satire.
The Old Testament is fucked up, which is probably why I’d rather read it than the hippie nonsense in the New Testament. Sure, Jesus had his moments of badassery, but he didn’t play cruel pranks on his followers to test their devotion like his old man did. Perhaps the most insane of God’s shenanigans was convincing Abraham to murd-, ahem,”sacrifice” his son. What’s more insane is the fact two dudes decided to create a video game based on this legendary tale of prolicide, The Binding of Isaac.
I’ll admit, some of what takes place in Tycoon does reflect reality to a degree. The brief reviews could be indicative of the industry’s obsession with scores as opposed to constructive criticism, and achieving perfect scores and pandering to demographics is all that seems to matter in the game and the real world. However, I don’t really think Tycoon really wants to be more than ‘a glimpse’ at video game production, and any attempt to comment on the industry from this dull, monotonous experience fails to hit its mark.
“I’ve played better.”
Jane Jensen struck gold in the 1990s with Gabriel Knight, but Moebius: Empire Rising fails to reach the same heights. The lack of meaningful puzzles and memorable characters make it pale in comparison to her Sierra adventures, and when put next to Telltale or Daedalic’s offerings, it comes off as even more outdated. It’s a shame that an influential developer such as Jensen is so behind the times.
In many respects, A Realm Reborn has charmed me. The developers did an excellent job at creating a Final Fantasy experience online even though they borrowed a lot of the design. On the other hand, it’s unfortunate that it runs so sluggishly on Sony’s outdated console, but perhaps the upcoming Playstation 4 version will alleviate some of these issues. This is definitely a title that fans of MMOs and Final Fantasy should give a shot, just not on the Playstation 3.
The bounty of characters, fast-paced action and countless strategic possibilities make Marvel Puzzle Quest: Dark Reignabsurdly playable. Crafting that perfect team able take control of the board and last for numerous consecutive rounds is satisfying to say the least, and the lack of an obvious paywall gives everyone a chance to do that without diving deep into their pockets. This is F2P and match-three done right.
Obviously, Final Fantasy X is the real prize in Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster, but X-2 has something to offer if viewed in the right light. This is one of the best HD remasters around and with any luck, Square-Enix will see fit to give other Final Fantasy games the same treatment or, better yet, make a new installment that delivers on the same level. Go Aurochs!
Stick of Truth isn’t exactly the game it should be in an ideal world, but it comes reasonably close. It certainly gets the look and feel of the South Park show down pat, but it lacks in the gameplay department and runs a tad too short at only 10 hours. Overall, it’s a fun jaunt through stupidity. Given the nature of the show, I suppose that means it’s a success…
